Tire Sales & Service in Columbus, OH

Tires are the only part of your vehicle that actually touches the road. Everything else — your brakes, suspension, steering, all-wheel-drive system — delivers its performance through four palm-sized contact patches of rubber. When your tires are worn, underinflated, or mismatched, every other system in the vehicle is compromised.

At Petty's Auto & Electric Service, we sell, mount, balance, rotate, and repair tires for cars, trucks, and SUVs. We source from multiple tire suppliers so we can match the right tire to your vehicle, your driving habits, and your budget — not just sell you whatever's in stock. And because we're a full-service shop, we can handle the alignment, suspension inspection, and TPMS work that goes hand-in-hand with tire service.

Seasonal Reminder: Tires lose about 1 PSI for every 10°F drop in temperature. When Columbus goes from summer highs to fall lows, your tires can lose 5–10 PSI without a leak — enough to trigger your TPMS light, increase tire wear, and reduce fuel economy. Check your pressures with a gauge when the seasons change, and check the spare while you're at it.

Signs You Need New Tires — or Tire Service

Tires wear gradually, so it's easy to miss the point where they go from "fine" to "unsafe." Here's what to watch for:

  • Low tread depth — the penny test: insert a penny head-down into the groove; if you see the top of Lincoln's head, the tread is at or below 2/32" and the tire needs replacement
  • Uneven wear patterns — heavy wear on the inside or outside edge usually means an alignment problem; center wear means overinflation; edge wear on both sides means underinflation
  • Sidewall cracking or dry rot — visible cracks in the sidewall mean the rubber is aging and losing its structural integrity, regardless of remaining tread depth
  • Bulges or blisters — a bubble on the sidewall indicates internal structural damage, usually from a pothole or curb impact; the tire can fail without warning
  • Vibration at highway speed — can indicate a tire that's out of balance, has a flat spot, or has internal belt separation
  • TPMS warning light — one or more tires are significantly underinflated, or a sensor has failed; either way, check pressures immediately
  • Hydroplaning in wet conditions — worn tread can't channel water away from the contact patch; if you're losing traction in rain, your tires may not have enough tread to be safe

Our Tire Services

We handle everything tire-related — from helping you choose the right tire to keeping it on the road as long as possible.

Tire Sales & Installation

We source tires from multiple suppliers to find the right match for your vehicle, driving style, and budget. Every installation includes mounting, computer balancing, new valve stems, and a TPMS reset. We'll also check your alignment and recommend a correction if needed — because new tires on a misaligned vehicle start wearing unevenly from day one.

Tire Rotation

Regular rotation evens out wear across all four tires and extends the life of the full set. We recommend rotation every 5,000 to 7,500 miles — roughly every other oil change. Front-wheel-drive vehicles are especially important to rotate because the front tires handle both steering and power delivery.

Tire Balancing

An out-of-balance tire causes vibration and accelerates tread wear. We use a computerized spin balancer to identify heavy spots and apply precision wheel weights to correct them. Balancing should be done whenever tires are mounted, rotated, or if you develop a vibration at speed.

Flat Tire Repair

We repair punctures using the industry-standard plug-patch method, which seals both the inside and outside of the tire. We dismount the tire and inspect the interior before repairing — because a repair that doesn't check for internal damage can fail. Sidewall punctures and damage from driving flat cannot be safely repaired and require replacement.

TPMS Service

Tire Pressure Monitoring System sensors have batteries that last 5 to 10 years. When a sensor dies, your TPMS light stays on permanently even with correct tire pressures. We diagnose, replace, and reprogram TPMS sensors — and as an electrical specialty shop, we're well equipped for the occasional sensor communication issue that frustrates other shops.

Tire Inspection & Consultation

Not sure if your tires are still safe? We measure tread depth across the full contact patch, check for age-related deterioration, inspect for damage, and read the wear patterns to identify alignment or suspension issues. If you need tires, we'll explain your options honestly — if you don't, we'll tell you that too.

Why Choose Petty's Auto for Tires?

Full-Service Advantage

Unlike a tire-only shop, we do the alignment, suspension inspection, and TPMS diagnostics in-house. Everything your tires need happens under one roof, in one visit.

Right Tire, Right Price

We source from multiple suppliers instead of pushing one brand. That means we can match the right tire to your vehicle and budget — not just sell what's on the shelf.

We Read Wear Patterns

Uneven tire wear tells a story. We diagnose what's causing the wear — alignment, suspension, inflation — and fix the underlying problem so your next set of tires lasts.

TPMS & Electrical Expertise

TPMS sensor issues that stump other shops are routine for us. Electrical diagnostics is our specialty — including the sensor communication glitches that keep that warning light on.

Tire Service FAQ

Common questions Columbus drivers ask about tires, tire maintenance, and replacement.

How do I know when my tires need to be replaced?

Use the penny test: place a penny head-down in the tread groove — if you can see the top of Lincoln's head, the tread is below 2/32" and needs replacement. Also watch for sidewall cracking, bulges, vibration at highway speed, and age. Most manufacturers recommend replacement after 6 to 10 years from the manufacture date, regardless of tread depth.

How much do new tires cost in Columbus?

Economy passenger tires start around $80 to $120 each. Mid-range all-season tires run $120 to $180 each. Premium or performance tires can be $180 to $300+ each. Truck and SUV tires run higher due to size. Every set we install includes mounting, balancing, new valve stems, and a TPMS reset.

How often should I rotate my tires?

Every 5,000 to 7,500 miles — roughly every other oil change. Front tires wear faster on front-wheel-drive vehicles. Regular rotation evens out wear across all four, extending the life of the full set and maintaining balanced handling.

Can a flat tire be repaired or does it need to be replaced?

A tread puncture from a nail or screw can usually be repaired with a plug-patch combination. Sidewall punctures, damage larger than a quarter inch, or tires driven flat generally can't be safely repaired. We inspect the inside of the tire before recommending repair or replacement.

What does TPMS mean and why is my tire pressure light on?

TPMS is the Tire Pressure Monitoring System. The light means one or more tires are significantly underinflated, or a sensor battery has died (they last 5 to 10 years). Check pressures with a gauge first. If pressures are correct and the light stays on, the sensor needs attention.

Should I buy all four tires at once or can I replace just two?

All four at once is ideal for matched traction. Replacing in pairs is acceptable — newer tires always go on the rear axle for wet-weather stability. Single-tire replacement is a last resort and only works if the remaining tires have matching tread depth. All-wheel-drive vehicles are especially sensitive to mismatched tires.
